WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI) joined Senators Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Michael Bennet (D-CO), as well as 42 Senate colleagues, in introducing the Tax Cut for Workers Act, legislation to deliver a tax break to millions of working Americans.
“As Trump and Republicans sow chaos throughout the country in order to pay for trillions in tax cuts for wealthy billionaires, Democrats are fighting to lower costs for working families,” said Senator Hirono. “I’m glad to join my colleagues in introducing this legislation to give millions of working Americans a much-needed tax break.”
The existing Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)–the Worker Tax Cut–has been delivering tax relief for millions of workers for decades, but this legislation would give more working Americans a break by cutting taxes for working-class Americans without children, who currently receive a much smaller EITC than workers with children. This expansion would nearly triple the average tax break many Americans receive from the existing EITC and extends eligibility for the tax cut to workers under the age of 25 and over the age of 64.
In addition to Senators Hirono, Cortez Masto, and Bennet, the Tax Cut for Workers Act is cosponsored by Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-MD), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Chris Coons (D-DE), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Dick Durbin (D-IL), John Fetterman (D-PA), Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY), Martin Heinrich (D-NM), John Hickenlooper (D-CO), Tim Kaine (D-VA), Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Andy Kim (D-NJ), Angus King (I-ME), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Ben Ray Luján (D-NM), Ed Markey (D-MA), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Chris Murphy (D-CT), Patty Murray (D-WA), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Gary Peters (D-MI), Jack Reed (D-RI), Jacky Rosen (D-NV), Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Elissa Slotkin (D-MI), Tina Smith (D-MN), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Mark Warner (D-VA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), Peter Welch (D-VT), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), and Ron Wyden (D-OR).
