Hirono Encourages Social Security Beneficiaries, Others with Dependent Children to Apply for Direct Cash Payments Before Wednesday Deadline

Deadline is tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 at 6 am Hawaii Time

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii) today announced that Social Security beneficiaries and others who do not file taxes with qualifying dependent children should apply for their direct cash payments (up to $1,200 per individual) and additional payments for eligible children ($500 per child) before the Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) Wednesday deadline.

Those eligible for additional payments should apply by tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 at 6 am Hawaii Time to ensure that the additional payments for dependents can be automatically added to the $1,200 individual payments in the coming weeks. The IRS website provides instructions on how to apply to combine these payments here: https://www.irs.gov/coronavirus/non-filers-enter-payment-info-here

Senator Hirono has worked with her Senate colleagues to make sure Social Security retiree and disability beneficiaries, Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients, Veterans Affairs (VA) beneficiaries, and other individuals who do not normally file federal income taxes automatically receive their direct payments from the IRS. However, those beneficiaries and recipients with dependent children will still need to provide their information to the IRS before they receive their additional payments for eligible children. Beneficiaries are encouraged to provide their information before Wednesday to avoid delays in receiving their additional payments.

“As we continue working to make sure all those eligible for direct payments receive this assistance, I urge those with qualifying dependent children to apply for these payments as soon as possible,” Senator Hirono said. “Hawaii residents and families who need economic relief from the financial toll of coronavirus can provide their information online.”
